Data Link Layer
ä Often split into two sublayers:
ä MAC sublayer: deals with sharing a common
channel, as in Ethernet or Token Ring networks, is
empty for networks build with dedicated point-point
connections
ä Logical link control sublayer: sits on top of MAC
sublayer, assumes that adjacent machines
communicate over a dedicated physical or logical
link, deals with:
ä flow control
ä error control
ä framing
ä Example standards: IEEE 802 standards
ä 802.2: Logical link control
ä 802.3: Ethernet
ä 802.5: Token ring
ä 802.8: FDDI and fiber optics advisory group
ä 802.11: Wireless Ethernet
