ESSAY STYLE GUIDE

This course covers a wide range of topics, with substantial variation in specificity and rigor.  As well, individual students may have more or less knowledge or interest is any particular topic.  With these points in mind, a short essay (limited to 1800 words) on specific new communications technologies is required.  The essay is intended to give each student the opportunity to pursue the study of a particular technology while considering the issues and generalities brought up in the lecture material and general readings.

The essay should present a cogent description of the technology; and develop and support an opinion on the importance, relevance, probable impact, and outstanding technical problems with developing the technology.  Sufficient technical detail must be included to support the writer’s opinion.

The major criteria for evaluation will be the amount of information conveyed to the reader, the clarity with which it is presented, and the persuasiveness with which the author’s point is made.  The essays will be evaluated with respect to the following criteria:

20%     Theme
o       clear statement of the objective and/or purpose of the essay, i.e., the point you are trying to make.
o       expression of an opinion regarding the technology
65%     Content and Organization
o       breadth and relevance of the material
o       depth of technical content
o       logical organization of the material
o       relevance of content to the support of the opinion
15%     Style
o       identification – course, assignment number, name, student number, pagination
o       usefulness of abstract
o       references and citations

SUBMISSION

The Essay must be submitted electronically, preferably as a Word document, attached to an email.  Please name both the subject of the email and the attached file as the concatenation of your Last Name, the initial of your First Name, and then letter ‘E’, indicating that the attachment is the Essay.  For example, Hamid Vafaie, whose Last Name is Vafaie and whose First Name is Hamid, would submit his essay as VafaieHE.

PLAGIARISM

Writing an essay based on reference material is a tricky matter at times.  Students are reminded that all submissions must be their own work.  Plagiarism is a serious academic offense and every use of another’s material must be acknowledged in appropriate ways.  The article http://www.zoology.ubc.ca/bpg/plagiarism.htm is highly recommended as a guide to the avoidance of any question of unintentional plagiarism.  Lunsford and Connors “The New St. Martin’s Handbook”, 4th edition, 1999: Bedford/St. Martin’s is an excellent guide to the effective use of sources and the avoidance of plagiarism.  The latter also contains valuable information for multilingual students.

Caution

  1. It is inappropriate to submit the same material to fulfill the requirements in more than one course.  That includes material included, or to be included, in theses.

REQUIRED INFORMATION

Font

Times New Roman is preferred.  Please use 12-point font.  Use single spacing.

 Title Block

A Title Page is NOT required; however, the Essay should start with a Title Block that includes the Title of the Essay, Name of the Student, Student Number, Course Name and Number, and Date of Submission.  For example:

Voice Over IP (VoIP)

Term Essay

David Coll, SN001549
TTMG5002 Telecommunications Technology
December 8, 2005

Every page should be numbered. The student name could also be included in a Header.

 Abstract

Most reports, including the essay, should open with an abstract.  An abstract answers the question, “What are the important points made in this report?”  The Abstract is not the first paragraph of the Introduction.  An informative abstract [1] is preferred.  It presents as much of the contents of the report as possible; and summarizes the important information in the report, emphasizing the results, conclusions and recommendations.  A descriptive abstract, on the other hand, merely lists the topics in the paper.
